First brush with i-mode

I first came across the i-mode in 1999 at the CommunicAsia event held at the Singapore Expo. Of course, the concept of i-mode at that time was quite alien to me, so I marvelled at the Japanese phone designs, wondering why we didn't get cool phones like those in Singapore.

NTT DoCoMo had just launched the i-mode in Japan that year, so they were showing off their stuff all over the world. I still have one of the i-mode souvenirs given out at the Expo that day (picture on left). Yes, I still keep it because their presentation that day made such a fan out of me, even though I didn't quite understand what they were presenting.

And now, finally, i-mode is coming to Singapore. About time, too. A friend of mine recently commented that Singapore always gets the good stuff late. Although I kind of agree with him, I tell him better late than never.
